Publishing Ethics & Appeals

Last updated: 9 October 2026

Protecting authorship, research integrity, independent review, and the scholarly record.

Author responsibilities

Submit original work with accurate methods, results, citations, and declarations. List only contributors who meet the venue’s authorship criteria, obtain all authors’ approval, and identify a corresponding author. Declare funding, competing interests, relevant prior publications or preprints, and any overlapping submission. Follow the venue’s rules on simultaneous submission.

Research and participant protection

Where required, provide ethics approval, participant consent, data-use authorization, and relevant study registrations. Remove unnecessary personal or identifying information from research materials. Authors remain responsible for lawful dataset access and permissions for third-party content.

Reviewer and editor responsibilities

Review only work within your expertise and permitted assignments. Declare conflicts and recuse yourself where impartiality is compromised. Keep manuscripts and confidential correspondence private, avoid using unpublished ideas for personal advantage, and assess work on its scholarly merit.

AI and assistive tools

Authors should disclose material use of generative or assistive tools as required by the venue and verify all resulting claims and citations. AI tools cannot take responsibility for authorship. Reviewers and editors must not disclose confidential research to external tools without authorization. Automated checks and suggestions do not replace accountable human assessment.

Raise an integrity concern

Contact the responsible editor or programme chair through the submission conversation where appropriate, or email support for routing. Provide the venue, submission or publication reference, the concern, and relevant evidence. Avoid distributing private material beyond the people required to assess the report.

Editorial appeals and complaints

Ask the relevant venue for its appeal procedure and any deadline. Explain the specific procedural or factual issue and provide new evidence where relevant; disagreement with an outcome alone does not establish error. Request independent consideration if the concern involves the original decision-maker. Appeals do not guarantee reconsideration, acceptance, or a deadline extension. Service-access complaints can be sent to support separately.

Corrections and retractions

Report errors that materially affect published research to the publishing venue. The responsible editorial team determines whether a correction, expression of concern, retraction, or another action is needed, subject to its procedures. Preserve traceability of the scholarly record rather than silently replacing or deleting published content.

Related policies

Read the Peer Review Policy, Copyright & Open Access, and Code of Conduct. Individual journals and conferences may publish more specific requirements.
